Bluegrass Land Conservancy Protects Over 2,300 Acres in Oldham County with Four New Conservation Easements

Oldham County, KY (September 17, 2025) — Bluegrass Land Conservancy (BLC) is proud to announce the completion of four conservation easements in Oldham County, permanently protecting over 2,300 acres of farmland, riverfront, and critical wildlife habitat.

Three of the protected properties—Cardinal Ridge, Fern Lea, and Tirbracken—are owned by American Life and Accident Insurance Company of Kentucky and all have frontage along the Ohio River. Each of these farms lies within the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region, an area recognized for its importance to grassland birds and migratory species.

  • Cardinal Ridge (275 acres) features soils of statewide importance and supports a range of threatened and endangered species.
  • Fern Lea (727 acres) includes nearly two miles of Ohio River tributaries and habitat for species such as the Indiana bat, Whooping Crane, Monarch Butterfly, and Pink Mucket mussel.
  • Tirbracken (744 acres) boasts over 5,000 feet of river frontage and more than 3,000 feet of scenic byway along U.S. Highway 42.

In addition, a 602-acre farm owned by Hardscuffle, Inc. was also placed under easement. This farm includes a significant amount of prime farmland soils and is home to many of the same federally-listed species.

These conservation easements ensure that the land remains protected from development, supporting clean water, biodiversity, and agricultural viability in one of Kentucky’s fastest-growing counties.

“Oldham County is facing increasing development pressure, and these easements represent a major step in maintaining the region’s rural character, scenic beauty, and ecological health,” said Jessie Hancock, Executive Director of Bluegrass Land Conservancy. “Protecting large tracts like these helps create a robust conservation landscape.”

BLC extends its gratitude to Hardscuffle, Inc. and American Life and Accident Insurance Company of Kentucky for their commitment to land conservation and for entrusting BLC with the stewardship of these exceptional properties.
